More than 1,400 inmates fled from the Owerri Custodial Centre in Imo State and the Kuje Medium Custodial Centre in Abuja, following separate jailbreaks. Despite efforts to locate them, these escapees remain at large.

In the aftermath of the assault on the Owerri custodial centre two years ago, 864 of the escaped inmates remain unaccounted for, as reported by our correspondent who checked the Ministry of Interior’s website. The attack, carried out by armed individuals on April 5, 2021, resulted in the release of 1,844 detainees.

While attempts were made to access inmate profiles for verification, the information regarding the 864 unrecaptured individuals remained unclear. Simultaneously, more than a year and five months after the Kuje custodial centre breach, over 500 inmates are yet to be apprehended. Their names, images, and prison identification numbers were visible on the Nigerian Correctional Service’s website, indicating that they are still wanted for recapture.
