Sheikh Nawaf, the Emir of Kuwait, passes away at the age of 86

 

The Emir of Kuwait, Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has passed away at the age of 86, as announced by state media on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah Al Sabah, the minister of the emiri court, expressed deep sorrow in a statement broadcast on state television, mourning the loss of Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.

Kuwaiti state television interrupted its regular programming with Koranic verses before officially confirming the death of Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah had been hospitalized in late November due to an unspecified medical emergency.

Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf, the fifth son of Sheikh Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, began his political career at 25 as the governor of Hawalli province. He later served as interior minister and was appointed crown prince in 2006.

Sheikh Nawaf took over as Kuwait’s Emir in September 2020, succeeding his half-brother Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who passed away at the age of 91. Additionally, Sheikh Nawaf had served as Kuwait’s defense minister.

The current crown prince is Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Kuwait’s deputy ruler and another half-brother, who is 83 years old.
