Sheikh Meshal assumes the role of the new Emir of Kuwait shortly after the passing of Sheikh Nawaf.

Following the death of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Kuwait’s crown prince, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has been appointed as the new emir. The succession announcement was made by Issa Al-Kandari, deputy prime minister and minister of state for cabinet affairs.

Sheikh Nawaf, aged 86, passed away on Saturday, and while the cause of his death was not immediately disclosed, he had been admitted to the hospital last month due to a health emergency.

Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal, 83, had been acting as Kuwait’s de facto ruler since 2021, assuming most of Sheikh Nawaf’s responsibilities due to the latter’s declining health. According to Kuwait’s constitution, the crown prince automatically becomes the emir and can assume power after taking an oath in parliament. The new emir has up to a year to appoint an heir.

The choice of the new emir’s crown prince and premier will be closely observed as a younger generation within Kuwait’s ruling family seeks to secure positions of leadership.

Global leaders expressed their condolences for Sheikh Nawaf’s death. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, in a statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), fondly remembered Sheikh Nawaf as a great friend of the United Kingdom. Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also extended their condolences, expressing grief over the loss and asking for mercy and peace for Sheikh Nawaf.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan offered sincere condolences, highlighting Sheikh Nawaf’s impact on strengthening Saudi-Kuwaiti relations. The UAE announced a three-day mourning period, with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressing sadness over Sheikh Nawaf’s passing. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi offered condolences, describing Sheikh Nawaf as a significant supporter of Arab and Islamic nations, leading Egypt to declare a three-day nationwide mourning period.
