The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, has criticized the Anambra State Government for its approach in penalizing traditional rulers who grant chieftaincy titles to specific individuals. Expressing his discontent, Achebe specifically denounced the suspension of Igwe Damian O. Ezeani, the traditional ruler of Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area. The suspension stemmed from Igwe Ezeani’s recent conferment of a chieftaincy title upon Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represents Anambra South.
Last week, the Anambra State Government, acting through the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, Tony Nwabunwanne, implemented the suspension of the traditional ruler of Neni, eliciting further scrutiny and discussion about the government’s intervention in traditional affairs.
