Assailants assault the secretary of the Kogi governorship election tribunal, making off with crucial petition documents.

Gunmen targeted David Umar Mike, the Secretary of the Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, and seized crucial petition documents, as revealed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, in Lokoja on Wednesday. The police authorities disclosed that the assailants, armed with guns, took away all petition documents submitted by five political parties. These documents included petitions from the Action Alliance (AA), Action People’s Party (APP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), as well as two Record Books and a bag containing personal items belonging to David Umar Mike.

The incident occurred just before the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office at around 13:20 on Monday, while the victims were en route to the tribunal venue at the state High Court complex in Lokoja. According to the police report, David Umar Mike, Labode Apreala (Confidential Secretary), and Hassimu Adamu (Assistant Secretary) reported that they were intercepted by an SUV and two other SUVs, with seven hooded and heavily armed men. The gunmen fired shots into the air, forcibly removed the three individuals from their car, ransacked it, and made off with all the petition documents.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Onuoha Benthrand, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. The police command cautioned the public against making statements that could prejudice the ongoing investigation and urged anyone with pertinent information to come forward.

In the aftermath of the attack, the SDP and All Progressives Congress (APC) engaged in a war of words, each blaming the other for the incident. While the SDP claimed that the attack was orchestrated by hired political thugs, the APC insisted that it was a staged event. The police command continues to investigate the matter, and more details will be shared as the situation unfolds.
