The Ukrainian army reports that it downed 21 out of 49 drones overnight

Kyiv reported on Sunday that it had successfully eliminated 21 out of 49 Iranian-made “Shahed” drones launched by Russia overnight. Additionally, six guided missiles were directed at the northeastern city of Kharkiv.

These new Russian attacks followed an unprecedented assault on the city of Belgorod. Both sides exchanged accusations of targeting civilian areas in their shared border region over the weekend.

The Ukrainian air force, in a Telegram statement on Sunday, highlighted that the overnight drone strikes specifically aimed at the front line of defense, as well as civilian, military, and infrastructure facilities in the front-line territories.

The statement did not provide details on whether the six missiles had hit their intended targets.

Oleg Sinegubov, the head of Kharkiv city’s military administration, reported that 28 civilians, including two teenagers and a foreign citizen, were injured in the city attack. This strike marks the deadliest assault on civilians in Russia since the conflict began in February 2022.

The preceding day saw a tragic incident in Belgorod, where at least 22 people lost their lives, and numerous others were wounded. The Russian city, situated just 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the border, has been repeatedly struck, with Moscow claiming indiscriminate shelling.

Russia asserted that the attack on Saturday involved the use of controversial cluster munitions and accused Kyiv of targeting a sports center, an ice rink, and a university during an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council.
