Sokoto Assembly endorses the creation of community guards

In a significant development, the Sokoto State House of Assembly has given its nod to Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s proposal to establish a Community Guards Corps in the state. This decision came after a thorough examination of a report by the joint House Committees on Special Services and Security Matters, Judiciary, Justice, and Human Rights Committee.

The Committee, led by Alhaji Nasiru Adamu (PDP-Goronyo), presented a comprehensive report detailing the scrutiny undergone by the executive bill, which resulted in 28 recommendations.

These recommendations included crucial aspects such as reframing the bill’s title to ‘A bill for a law to establish the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps.’ The primary objectives outlined in the bill are to ensure the preservation of peace, the safety of individuals and their property, and the provision of prompt response in emergency situations.

Adamu emphasized the necessity for a new section addressing the service numbers of officers, and he highlighted the importance of correcting typographical, technical, and drafting errors identified by the Legal Services Department during the examination of the bill.

Upon the presentation of the report by Chairman Adamu, the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Tukur Bala, facilitated the consideration process. The members of the Assembly unanimously adopted the proposal through a voice vote, showcasing a united front in supporting the establishment of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps.

This move is anticipated to bolster security measures in the state, contributing to the overall well-being of the citizens and ensuring a prompt and effective response to emergency situations.

The approval signifies a proactive step by the Sokoto State government in addressing security concerns and fostering a safer environment for its residents.
