Tinubu grants approval for a 50% reduction in transportation fares across the country.

President Bola Ahmed has given the green light for a 50% reduction in interstate transportation fares for Nigerians traveling during the holiday season, spanning from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024.

The announcement was made by Mr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, during a briefing with State House Correspondents at Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday.

Alake, who chairs the committee overseeing this initiative, disclosed that discussions with relevant transportation bodies across Nigeria have resulted in an agreement for the government to subsidize 50% of transportation costs based on prices at the time of the meeting.

Air transportation is not included in this arrangement, clarified the minister, emphasizing that the primary focus is on benefiting the masses.

Starting from December 21, Nigerians willing to travel can avail themselves of public transport via minibuses and luxury buses at a 50% discount on the current cost, while all train services on existing routes will be provided at zero cost during this holiday season.

This special presidential intervention is set to commence on December 21 and conclude on January 4, 2024. The Ministry of Transportation will collaborate with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation to ensure the seamless implementation of this initiative. Alake assured that all relevant stakeholders in the industry have been engaged, and the Minister of Transportation has the comprehensive details, ensuring efficient execution.

However, air travel is excluded from the initiative as it is considered a luxury, and the primary aim is to cater to the needs of the masses. Alake explained that the initiative is specifically targeted at those who do not typically utilize air transport.
