Simon Lalong resigns from his ministerial role

In a significant development, Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Bako Lalong, has formally submitted his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The resignation paves the way for Lalong to assume his position as the Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to a statement released by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, the Special Adviser to the outgoing Minister on Media, Lalong conveyed his decision in a letter submitted to President Tinubu on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

In the letter, Lalong reminded President Tinubu that, following exhaustive legal processes, the Court of Appeal had declared him as the duly elected Senator for Plateau South Senatorial District. The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue him the Certificate of Return.

Lalong expressed that his decision to resign was not taken lightly, considering the trust and confidence President Tinubu had placed in him as a Minister in his cabinet.

Lalong had previously served as the Director General of the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Council, contributing significantly to the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Explaining the rationale behind his resignation, Lalong stated that, after extensive consultations, it has become expedient for him to proceed and take his seat at the Red Chambers.

His goal is to continue contributing to the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
