The Oyo State Police Command made a significant announcement on Thursday, revealing the apprehension of several officers, led by Inspector Rasheed Saheed, allegedly involved in the tragic killing of a youth corps member, Damilola Iyanda, in the Ogbomoso area of the state.
Damilola, who was serving in Ibadan, the state capital, met an untimely demise at a popular nightclub in Ogbomoso. Oluwafemi Iyanda, the deceased’s brother, recounted that Damilola had attended his convocation ceremony at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomoso earlier that day. Tragically, during an after-party, he was fatally shot by a police officer.
The police command, through its Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, disclosed that the implicated officers have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku. Commissioner of Police, Hamzat Adebola, ordered that the case be handled by the Homicide Department of the SCID, with direct oversight by the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The incident reportedly unfolded in the early hours of April 22, 2024, when a distress call was received regarding suspected cultists causing havoc at the nightclub. Inspector Rasheed Saheed and his team responded to the call, but the situation escalated as alleged cultists obstructed the police’s access to the scene, leading to gunfire exchange.
Tragically, the confrontation resulted in Damilola’s death and injury to his brother, Iyanda Femi Israel. The injured brother has since been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment. All officers implicated in the incident, including Inspector Saheed, are currently detained at the SCID, pending further investigations and legal proceedings.
