He was suffering from leukemia, a type of blood cancer, and was under the care of State House doctors until his death.

Akeredolu had been on medical leave in Germany for three months and returned to Nigeria in September. He was advised by President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who has been acting as the governor since then.

Akeredolu faced public criticism for trying to govern his state from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, after his return. His wife, Betty, also suspended her 70th birthday celebrations in July due to her husband’s ill health.

Akeredolu was elected as the governor of Ondo State in 2016 and re-elected in 2020. He was a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party. He is survived by his wife and four children.
