Workers from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) launched protests at various electricity distribution company offices on Monday, opposing the recent Band A tariff hike. They gathered at the offices of DisCos, preventing employees from commencing work for the day.
In Lagos, protesters congregated at the corporate headquarters of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, demanding the reversal of the Band A tariff. Similarly, in Oyo, demonstrators picketed the offices of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
Policemen were deployed to maintain order amidst the protests. The NLC and TUC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, urging a rollback of the revised tariff. Conversely, the Federal Government cautioned against reversing the tariff, stating that such action could adversely affect the power sector. The International Monetary Fund recommended removing electricity subsidies in other tariff bands to bolster the economy.
