LP Announces By-Election Schedule, Sets Senate Form Fee at N5m

In preparation for the upcoming by-elections scheduled for February 3, 2024, the Labour Party (LP) has unveiled a comprehensive timetable and activity schedule for candidates vying for Senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assemblies seats.

The announcement, made by the National Secretary of the Labour Party, Umar Ibrahim, outlines key dates such as the commencement of form collection from December 28, 2023, to January 4, 2024, with the primaries set for January 7, 2024.

The party leadership has also finalized the fees associated with the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for prospective candidates.

The approved fees are as follows: Senate – N1.5 million (Expression of Interest) and N3.5 million (Nomination); House of Representatives – N1 million (Expression of Interest) and N2 million (Nomination); House of Assembly – N100,000 (Expression of Interest) and N500,000 (Nomination).

In a notable gesture, the Labour Party has waived the fees for Female Aspirants and Persons Living with Disabilities (PWD) Aspirants, specifically for the Expression of Interest Forms.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already set February 3, 2024, as the date for the by-elections, prompted by the resignation or demise of members in both the National and State Houses of Assembly.

The vacancies are spread across two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies in nine states across the Federation. As political preparations intensify, the stage is set for a dynamic electoral process with candidates vying for crucial positions in the government.
