The Federal Government has announced the imminent launch of freight services on the Lagos-Kano narrow gauge rail line. This revelation surfaced during the visit of Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, who conducted an on-the-spot inspection of the project site in Kano State on Thursday.
Contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, disclosed that the line has been linked to the Zawaciki Dala Dry Port in Kano, the state’s commercial hub. Minister Alkali emphasized that initiating freight operations would not only prolong the lifespan of the nation’s highways but also potentially reduce the number of fatalities resulting from road accidents.
Alkali praised the progress made, noting a significant improvement since his previous inspection. He outlined plans to segment the project to enhance efficiency, with segments including Kano-Daura in the coming year, Daura to Maradi, and Dutse to Kano by 2026.
