Tinubu holds a meeting with Fubara, Odili, and other individuals at Aso Rock amidst the crisis in Rivers State.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently engaged in a private meeting with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Fubara was accompanied to the meeting by former Rivers State Governor Sir Peter Odili and other key stakeholders from the state.
The President is intervening to address the ongoing conflict between the governor and his predecessor, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, with Wike previously seen at the State House.
Sources within the presidency have confirmed that the meeting is likely related to recent developments in Rivers State. Notably, 27 out of 32 members of the State House of Assembly, who are aligned with the FCT Minister, recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In response to the political turmoil, Rivers State elders, led by former Governor Chief Rufus Ada-George, strongly oppose the attempt to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The elders also condemn the mass defection of 27 lawmakers from the PDP to the APC. These sentiments were expressed in a communique issued after an emergency meeting in Port Harcourt and signed by Ada-George, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, and 12 others.
The elders express dismay at the lack of response from both Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to their letters seeking an audience to discuss the escalating political crisis.
They highlight the alarming and dangerous nature of recent events in the state, including the bombing of the state House of Assembly on October 29, 2023, and an alleged attack on Fubara by security agents on October 30, 2023.
