The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) have both voiced their support for a proposed bill aimed at barring politicians found guilty of tax evasion from contesting elective positions in Nigeria. This endorsement follows an announcement by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, revealing plans to pass the executive bill in the National Assembly.
Oyedele disclosed further that an amendment to existing tax laws will accompany the bill to ensure tax compliance and deter defaulting by political figures. During the 2024 strategic retreat for staff of the Joint Tax Board, he also outlined the Federal Government’s intention to establish a national tax amnesty programme.
The issue of tax compliance and political participation has long been contentious during election periods. Despite arguments about the lack of explicit constitutional requirements, Oyedele acknowledged the significance of tax accountability in governance. Reacting to the development, APC’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, hailed the move as a means to hold aspiring officeholders accountable, emphasizing the severity of tax evasion as a crime.
Echoing similar sentiments, Labour Party Campaign Organisation’s Chief Spokesman, Yunusa Tanko, expressed concerns about the bill’s enforceability. While acknowledging its potential, Tanko emphasized the crucial need for strict enforcement of existing laws to ensure the eligibility of candidates and promote integrity in elections.
