Two killed, 70+ houses burnt in Kogi communal clash
A deadly communal clash unfolded in Kogi State, resulting in the loss of two lives and the destruction of more than 70 houses. The conflict occurred between the Oturpo-Ojile and Ochi-Ibadan communities within Ankpa Local Government Area.
The unrest was triggered when villagers from Ochi-Ibadan allegedly killed a man from Oturpo-Ojile who was returning from Lagos.
In retaliation, enraged youths from Oturpo-Ojile reportedly went to Ochi-Ibadan, setting fire to over 70 houses.
Hon. Akus Lawal, the representative of Ankpa I state Constituency, addressed the incident during a session at the Kogi State House of Assembly.
He expressed concern over the communal clash and emphasized the need to prevent its recurrence. The clash, which occurred on January 14, 2024, was attributed to the death of a man from Oturpo-Ojile during his journey.
Lawal acknowledged the prompt response of the Commissioner of Police and the Kogi State Government, led by Alhaji Yahaya Bello. He urged the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency to provide immediate relief materials for the affected victims.
SP William Aya, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the incident, stating that Peter and another individual were killed as a result of mob action during the communal clash.
He reported that 30 houses were razed, and numerous properties were destroyed. The Commissioner of Police, Bethrand Onuoha, visited the communities, and normalcy has been restored.
