Two individuals sustained injuries in Abuja as an explosion occurred in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident took place in the Maitama area of the FCT on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, near a refuse dump.
Following widespread reports of a bomb explosion on social media, the Nigerian Police responded to the incident.
The Federal Capital Police Command dismissed claims of a bomb explosion in Maitama, stating that the occurrence was the result of an overheated metal refuse container triggered by intense heat.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by FCT police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, preliminary findings suggest that the overheated metal refuse container exploded, causing injuries to two refuse evacuators who are currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital.
The police emphasized the need for caution and discouraged the use of metal refuse bins, recommending instead the use of plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal, as they present a reduced risk of incidents related to overheated metal refuse containers.
