Two fatalities in a school shooting in western Russia

In western Russia, a school shooting occurred when a teenage girl shot and fatally wounded one person before turning the gun on herself.

The incident took place in Bryansk, near the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders, on Thursday morning.

The shooting resulted in five people being injured, with one of them in critical condition, as reported by Russian authorities.

The firearm utilized by the young girl had been officially registered under her father’s name, according to statements from a parliamentarian.

Authorities were summoned to Gymnasium No 5 in Bryansk at approximately 09:15 local time (06:15 GMT) on Thursday.

Alexey Kuznetsov, Russia’s deputy health minister, reported that one victim was currently undergoing surgery for injuries sustained during the incident.

There is speculation among law enforcement that the girl may have been a victim of bullying at the school.

While school shootings are unfortunately not uncommon in Russia, Thursday’s occurrence is notable for being the first known instance involving a female perpetrator.

In 2021, a 19-year-old individual took the lives of seven children and two adults at a school in Kazan. The subsequent year witnessed a tragic incident in Udmurtia where 18 people lost their lives in a school shooting.
