Plateau: Ex-Dep Speaker Urges State Police Amid Killings

Chibudom Nwuche, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has reiterated the need for the establishment of state police to address the rising incidents of killings in the country.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during a reflection on the life of the late former Speaker, Ghali Na’Abba, whom he served under from 1999 to 2003, Nwuche underscored the crucial role the National Assembly could play in addressing the prevailing insecurity.

Nwuche asserted that the National Assembly possesses the authority to enact resolutions that set clear deadlines for the Armed Forces to tackle security challenges or face dismissal from office.

Expressing deep concern over the escalating insecurity, particularly the killings in Plateau State, he questioned the efficacy of the numerous security agencies in the face of continuous attacks.

In light of the urgency of the situation, Nwuche advocated for the creation of state police and proposed that responsible and qualified individuals be allowed to possess “defensive weapons.” He argued that empowering citizens in this manner could contribute to enhancing security.

Shifting his focus to legislative matters, the former deputy speaker called on the National Assembly to adopt the principles of unity and integrity exemplified by the late Ghali Na’Abba.

He urged a reinvention of the legislative arm to better serve public interests while maintaining a collaborative relationship with the executive branch.

Nwuche praised Na’Abba as an upright leader who championed the cause of legislative independence despite financial inducements and external pressures.

To honor Na’Abba’s legacy, the former lawmaker suggested the renaming of a monument, underscoring the importance of commemorating the contributions of the late Kano State politician.
