NDLEA apprehends Qatar-based businessman with psychoactive substances

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended Agu Evidence Amobi, a Qatar-based businessman, along with Uchegbu Onyebuchi Obi, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Amobi was arrested while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to Doha, carrying 1.30kg of concealed cannabis sativa.

He claimed to have been working in Doha for over 10 years and said he purchased the substance in Enugu to fund his rent in both Doha and Nigeria, as well as his children’s school fees.

Simultaneously, NDLEA operatives intercepted a shipment of 72,000 pills of tramadol 225mg, weighing 38.50kg, intended for Kano. On Christmas day in Yobe state, officers intercepted a truck carrying 39 blocks of cannabis sativa and 128,500 pills of opioids.

Follow-up operations led to the arrest of the owner of the cannabis consignment, Ali Ibrahim, with an additional 208 blocks recovered. In Imo state, a patrol on Christmas Eve intercepted a bus with 400 bottles of codeine syrup and 7,590 pills of opioids en route to Port-Harcourt.

Further operations led to the arrest of David Michael in Kano with 49 blocks of cannabis and Umar Abdullahi in the same city with 27,350 opioid pills.

The Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the efforts of various commands and urged them to continue their offensive actions against drug barons and cartels in the new year.

He also wished all officers, their families, stakeholders, and the public a rewarding new year.
