INEC has scheduled February 3 for 44 re-run and bye-elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set February 3, 2024, as the date for the conduct of 44 supplementary elections, according to Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information Voter Education Committee (IVEC) of INEC.

This announcement was made on Friday through a statement titled ‘Timetable and Schedule of Activities for Bye-Elections and Court-Ordered Re-run Elections.’

Daily Trust has reported that the elections consist of nine bye-elections and 35 court-ordered re-run elections.

The approval of the timetable and schedule of activities by the commission follows the resignation or demise of members of the National and State Houses of Assembly, as declared by the Presiding Officers, including the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Speakers of State Houses of Assembly.

These vacancies are distributed across two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies, spanning nine states of the federation, as highlighted by Olumekun.

The INEC chairman further explained that the commission is also overseeing re-run elections arising from the 2023 general elections, as directed by various Election Petition Appeal Tribunals, impacting a total of 35 constituencies.

Among these constituencies, three cover entire constituencies, while others involve only a few polling units (PUs).

Both categories of elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously on Saturday, February 3, 2024. The detailed delimitation data, including registration areas, polling unit names, the number of registered voters, and PVCs collected, has been uploaded to the INEC website and social media platforms to guide political parties, candidates, and inform the public.

Olumekun emphasized the importance of strict adherence to the specified timelines by political parties and candidates for the seamless conduct of these elections.
