Unidentified assailants have fatally shot two individuals serving in the Anambra State Vigilante Service in Aguluzigbo, located in the Anaocha Local Government area of Anambra State in South East Nigeria.

A disturbing video of the incident, viewed by SaharaReporters on Tuesday afternoon, depicts the aftermath of the attack, with two Vigilante members lying motionless along the roadside in pools of blood.

In the video, a voice, presumed to be that of the person recording, speaks in Igbo language, stating, “You have witnessed the actions of the unknown gunmen in Aguluzigbo now.”

This tragic event highlights the precarious security situation in the region, causing concern and emphasizing the need for effective measures to address the escalating violence.

Upon reaching out to the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, SaharaReporters received confirmation of an armed attack in Aguluzigbo.

While he did not explicitly confirm the fatalities, Ikenga acknowledged the incident and informed that the police command had dispatched additional forces to support the state vigilante operatives in confronting the assailants.

Despite lacking a comprehensive understanding of the events at that moment, he assured SaharaReporters that he would provide further details as soon as possible.

This indicates an ongoing effort by law enforcement to address the situation and underscores the importance of a thorough investigation into the incident.

He stated, “There is a preliminary report of a security incident involving armed individuals and vigilantes in Aguluzigbo.

I am aware that security forces and vigilante groups engaged these armed individuals. Our personnel have been deployed to provide assistance to the vigilante teams.

“At this point, specific details are not yet available, but I will ensure to provide you with a comprehensive update once we have a clearer understanding.

Our operatives are actively present in the area, collaborating with the vigilantes to restore peace.”

Aguluzigbo encompasses six villages, namely Iruowelle, Etuleze, Ihulu, Ufa, Ifite, and Nduana. The town is situated near seven other towns, including Agulu, Ora-eri, Akwaeze, Igbo-ukwu, Nanka, Obeledu, and Umuona.
