Criminals assault doctors at an Ekiti hospital and rob a deceased person’s remains.

Hoodlums attacked doctors at the EKITI State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, stealing a corpse in the process. This incident, which took place on Monday, has disrupted hospital activities due to an emergency and an indefinite strike declared by labor unions following the assault by suspected hoodlums.

The attackers damaged hospital facilities and made off with a corpse believed to be the father of one of the assailants. Consequently, the Association of Resident Doctors, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, has instructed its members to initiate an indefinite strike immediately.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director, Professor Kayode Olabanji, and signed by the Association’s President, Dr Famous Adeyemi, the strike was prompted by the assault on doctors, destruction of hospital property, and the theft of a corpse during the attack.

The association calls on the hospital management, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, and the state assembly to apprehend the culprits, meet the pending demands for improved welfare, and enact laws criminalizing assaults on health workers.

The spokesperson for the University Teaching Hospital, Rolake Adewumi, confirmed the incident, revealing that four additional armed policemen were deployed to enhance security. The state police commissioner has initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators, pledging to ensure their arrest and prosecution.

In response to the incident, the hospital’s management, led by Chief Medical Director Professor Kayode Olabanji, condemned the vandalization of the Accident and Emergency Complex and the theft of a corpse. Management has heightened security with armed policemen stationed at key points, and the police commissioner has committed to frequent patrols.

The hospital’s management met with the State Chairman of the Road Transport Employer Association of Nigeria to identify the ring leader, as the management believes the person involved is a member of the association. The hospital assured staff that steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future and emphasized zero tolerance for any form of staff molestation during duty.
