Commander says NDLEA nabbed 252 drug offenders in Osun in 2023

From January to December 2023, the Osun State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended 252 drug offenders.

Mr Chidi Nnadi, the NDLEA Commander in the state, announced in a statement on Saturday in Osogbo that the offenders included 214 men and 38 women.

He reported that the command obtained the conviction of 57 offenders, who received sentences varying from three months to five years in jail.

He stated that 47 cases are still awaiting trial.

He revealed that the command confiscated illegal drugs weighing 1,909.69kg in that period.

“During that time, the drug supply reduction initiatives resulted in the identification and elimination of 9.5 hectares of cannabis farms (23.759 tonnes of cannabis sativa) in Ifedayo and Oriade local government areas,” he said.

He said that the agency conducted a short counselling session with 79 drug users (PWUD) and launched awareness/sensitisation campaigns in places of worship, schools, bus stations, markets, and workplaces.

He refuted the claim that Osun was the second-largest cannabis producer in the South West.

He expressed his gratitude to the agency’s Chairman, Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), and the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, for their dedication to eliminating substance abuse in the state and the country.
