Former GMD NNPC Dr. Thomas John

Thomas John, the ex-general manager of NNPC, has passed away at the age of 84.

 

The former Group Managing Director (GMD) and interim alternate chairman of the Board of the now-defunct Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Thomas John, passed away at the age of 84.

The news of John’s death was communicated in a statement on Twitter by Olufemi O. Soneye, the chief corporate communications officer of the company, on Thursday, December 14, 2023.

Thomas John, recognized as an exemplary administrator and seasoned professional in the industry, served as the 5th GMD of NNPC, succeeding the late Aret Adams from April 1990 to June 1992.

In addition to his responsibilities at NNPC, he made significant contributions to the sector, holding positions such as Non-Executive Director at South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO), Executive Chairman at Hydropec Engineering Services Ltd., and formerly, a Non-Executive Director at United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc.

The statement conveyed condolences on behalf of the entire NNPC Ltd. Management and Staff. Mele Kyari, the GCEO, expressed the company’s deep sympathies to the deceased’s family.

“On behalf of the entire NNPC Ltd. Management and Staff, the GCEO, Mele Kyari, extends the Company’s heartfelt condolences to his dear wife, family, friends, and relatives during this very trying period,” stated the state-owned oil company.
