Abiodun Orders Ogun Gas Explosion Evacuation

In response to Saturday’s gas explosion in the Ita-Oshin area of Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun issued directives on Sunday for the evacuation of residents from affected buildings. During his inspection of the area’s damage, he emphasized the necessity of conducting integrity tests on the structures to ensure safety.

Governor Abiodun pledged that the state government would cover the medical expenses of victims and provide compensation to owners of damaged properties. The incident, resulting from a gas tanker explosion on the Abeokuta-Sango-Lagos Expressway, claimed one life, injured six individuals, and led to the destruction of six vehicles. Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the details of the accident, attributing it to the brake failure of the gas truck. She reported that while two people sustained injuries, one person tragically lost their life in the ensuing fire.

Expressing concerns about the safety standards of trucks transporting Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) nationwide, Governor Abiodun called for a comprehensive review of safety regulations and oversight within the industry. He emphasized the importance of aligning safety measures with the industry’s advancements.

The governor announced the evacuation of certain buildings pending regulatory agency assessments of their structural integrity. Additionally, he assured compensation for affected individuals and pledged to cover medical expenses for those hospitalized.

Governor Abiodun scheduled a meeting with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Association to address tanker safety on state roads. He urged the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to ensure compliance with safety standards for CNG tanks used by trucks.

Meanwhile, Gasco Marine, the company responsible for the gas truck involved in the explosion, expressed condolences to the victims’ families and assured full cooperation with authorities in investigating the incident. The company reaffirmed its commitment to safety protocols and pledged to enhance health and safety policies to prevent future occurrences.
