Over four years, from 2019 to 2022, approximately 6.9 million candidates participated in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). However, out of this vast number, only 2.03 million individuals were successfully admitted into various tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Shockingly, a staggering 4.87 million candidates were left without admission.
Among those denied admission were 4,385 candidates who achieved impressive scores of 300 and above out of a possible 400. This revelation stemmed from a comprehensive analysis of data obtained from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The UTME, overseen by JAMB, serves as the primary examination for individuals aspiring to gain admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. While some institutions may conduct post-UTME screenings, JAMB’s verification remains a prerequisite for admission.
JAMB cited multiple factors contributing to the low admission rates, even for high-scoring candidates. Despite their impressive scores, many applicants faced challenges in securing admission, reflecting systemic issues within the tertiary education system.
