Tragic Road Accident Claims Lives of 11 Kenyan University Students

A tragic accident occurred on a rainy Monday evening when a bus carrying students from Kenyatta University collided with a truck along a busy highway in Maungu, about 360 kilometers from Nairobi. The students were on their way to Mombasa for an academic trip. The collision resulted in the deaths of 11 students from the university, while 42 others sustained serious injuries.

According to police reports, the accident happened around 5:50 pm when the university bus skidded to the right side of the road while attempting to overtake a line of vehicles due to the heavy rain. To avoid a head-on collision, the truck veered and hit the left side of the bus, leading to the tragic outcome.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the injured were promptly transported to a hospital in Voi for treatment. Kenyatta University expressed deep sadness over the incident and set up a help desk at its main campus to offer support to those affected. Sadly, this accident underscores the challenges of road safety in Kenya, where poor road conditions and disregard for traffic rules contribute to frequent accidents.
