Tragic Christmas: Gunmen Assault 15 Villages in Plateau, Resulting in 96 Deaths and 221 Houses Set Ablaze

 

At least 96 individuals lost their lives, and 221 homes were destroyed during an assault by gunmen on 15 communities in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau on Christmas Eve, as per DSP Alfred Alabo, the state’s police spokesman.

The attackers also burned eight vehicles and 27 motorcycles. The incident occurred simultaneously in 12 villages in Bokkos, resulting in over 79 deaths and the destruction of 221 houses.

Additionally, three communities in Barkin-Ladi were attacked, leading to 17 fatalities. Investigations are ongoing, with further updates to be provided soon.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed condolences to the affected families and communities. The association decried the violent acts, including the burning of houses and worship centers, emphasizing that such actions undermine the shared values of peace, unity, and mutual respect.

CAN commended the swift intervention of the military and called for intensified efforts in intelligence gathering to prevent future occurrences. While acknowledging the resilience of the people, CAN urged a collective commitment to building a peaceful and prosperous Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole.
