On Thursday, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, voiced his concerns about the escalating violence during the hunger protests across Nigeria and urged for restraint. The Sultan, also the President-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), called on the organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protest and other key stakeholders to pause hostilities and engage in dialogue to address the underlying issues.
In a statement issued by JNI Secretary-General Prof. Khalid Aliyu, the Sultan emphasized the need to prevent further escalation, highlighting that reports from the protests suggest a worsening situation. He stressed the importance of maintaining national stability to ensure the unity and peace of Nigeria and warned of severe consequences if the unrest continues unchecked.
The Sultan also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to address the nation and reassure citizens of his commitment to achieving peace, security, and food stability. He urged state governors to take proactive measures to de-escalate tensions and emphasized that silence was no longer an option during this critical period. Additionally, he called on Muslim leaders and Imams to promote peace and reflection among the faithful, especially as the nation.
