Mr. Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State, has appealed to former President Muhammadu Buhari for assistance in securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Aguocha visited Buhari at his Daura country home on Saturday, initiating a dialogue to find a political solution to Kanu’s continued detention. Kanu, who was arrested and repatriated from Kenya in July 2021, has been in detention facing multiple charges, including treason.
In a statement from Aguocha’s media team, the lawmaker expressed regret for past actions and comments by Kanu and apologized on his behalf. Aguocha emphasized the importance of a political resolution to address grievances and foster greater unity within the country. He conveyed to Buhari that resolving Kanu’s situation through political means would benefit all parties involved. The former President commended Aguocha for his humility and dedication to his constituency, affirming the appropriateness of his approach.
Aguocha had recently led 50 House of Representatives members from various geopolitical zones in signing a letter to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to direct the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to invoke specific legal provisions for Kanu’s release. The meeting with Buhari is part of a broader initiative to secure a political resolution to Kanu’s detention and trial, promoting dialogue and non-contentious methods for addressing national issues. Aguocha believes Kanu is willing to participate in building a new Nigeria based on peace, equity, justice, and prosperity.
