Senator urges Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Taraba

Senator David Jimkuta, representing Taraba South senatorial district, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on security in the Takum and Ussa local government councils of Taraba state.

Jimkuta, who also serves as the Senate Committee Chairman on Social Warfare and Poverty Alleviation, emphasized the need for this declaration to address the ongoing reckless killings in the mentioned local government councils.

Speaking in Wukari council, he stated that such a measure would allow farmers to return to their farmlands and rebuild their lives, addressing the unprecedented threat to the region’s food security.

According to Jimkuta, over 700 people have lost their lives in the past three months in the two local councils. He expressed concern that if these killings are not promptly addressed, they may spread to other parts of the state. The senator lamented the impact of banditry activities, which have left more than 50 villages in Ussa and Takum in disarray.

Urging security agencies to take decisive action, he called for collaborative efforts with locals to track down the bandits and kidnappers terrorizing the areas.

Jimkuta stressed the urgency, stating that the affected regions are crucial food producers, and the displacement of people could lead to a looming food crisis.

It’s worth noting that residents of the two councils are living in constant fear due to the unabated killings perpetrated by bandits.
