Ramadan: Gombe Villager Travels 9.5km Every Day to Get Free Dinner for His 9 Children

Amadu Galadima, a 49-year-old father of nine children, is among the many families benefitting from a Ramadan feeding program organized by the Charity Association Margarity, a Bulgarian-based charity organization, in Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe State. Every day, he undertakes a 9.5km journey from his village to Dukku to collect the Iftar meal for his family.

Galadima shared that he relies on the kindness of strangers for a motorcycle ride to Dukku, where the food distribution takes place. Sometimes, he even has to walk part of the way back home after collecting the food. Despite the challenges, Galadima is grateful for the assistance as it helps provide meals for his family of nine children, consisting of five girls and four boys.

The feeding program, which caters to about 300 individuals daily, targets widows, orphans, almajiri children, and other underprivileged persons in the community. The organization distributes takeaway packs of food at five centers in Dukku Local Government Area. However, the coordinator noted that this year’s program faced challenges due to reduced donations, partly attributed to the economic impact of the Gaza war. Nonetheless, the organization remains committed to assisting those in need, extending its efforts beyond Ramadan to include projects such as constructing boreholes and renovating orphanages in various states.
