The House of Representatives has emphasized the crucial need for protective measures to shield children from the detrimental aspects of the internet. Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Olumide Osoba, underscored this during the commencement of a public hearing on the Child Online Access Protection Bill 2023 and related matters concerning online violence against Nigerian children. Osoba stressed the paramount importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of children in the digital era, acknowledging the commendable efforts aimed at addressing online violence and safeguarding young individuals from its adverse effects.

In his address, Osoba highlighted the dual nature of the internet, acknowledging its transformative impact on society by facilitating global connections and offering numerous avenues for education, personal development, and entertainment. However, he also acknowledged the inherent risks associated with online platforms, particularly for vulnerable individuals, who often fall victim to various forms of violence such as cyberbullying, harassment, and exploitation. He emphasized the collective responsibility of society to shield children from these dangers and create a safer online environment conducive to their growth and development.

Osoba further emphasized that the proposed bill not only recognizes the threats posed to children’s safety due to online violence but also endeavors to establish comprehensive measures to prevent and address such incidents effectively. This legislative initiative reflects the commitment of lawmakers to proactively address emerging challenges in the digital landscape and uphold the rights and protection of children in the online sphere.
