The Nigeria Labour Congress is pushing for a significant increase in the minimum wage, specifically advocating for a staggering N794,000 for workers in the South West geopolitical zone. This bold demand was asserted by Funmi Sessi, chairperson of the Lagos State chapter of the NLC, during her presentation at a public hearing held by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage in Ikeja, Lagos. Sessi emphasized that the demand was unanimously supported by all members of the union in the South West region.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, set the wheels in motion for addressing the minimum wage issue by inaugurating a 37-member panel on January 30, 2024, at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja. This move underscores the seriousness with which the government is approaching the matter amid growing calls for improved wages to match the rising cost of living.
