During the commemoration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s first year in office for his second term, Commissioner Tolani Alli-Balogun of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education announced that the state government will allocate N1.5 billion to register 58,000 students for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Alli-Balogun highlighted the consistent commitment of the administration to fully cover the WASSCE fees for public school SS3 students. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration had previously allocated over N4.2 billion between 2020 and 2023 for this purpose. For the current school year, the governor approved N1,571,076,000 to cover registration fees and other expenses for 58,188 SS3 students taking the WASSCE.
In line with advancements in examination procedures, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) announced plans to transition to computer-based examinations starting in 2024. This move comes after the release of results from the first-ever CBT exam, the 2024–First Series, earlier in March, which showed a 42.07% pass rate among candidates.
