Kano LGA Protests Governor Dispute

Thousands of supporters from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) took to the streets on Saturday to protest the ongoing governorship dispute between Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart Nasir Gawuna.

The demonstrators, calling for a fair judgment from the apex court, emphasized the need to validate the mandate given to Yusuf by the people of Kano.

The protest, initially starting with a prayer for divine intervention in Rogo Local Government Area, escalated into chaos, leading to the burning of a vehicle on the streets.

In response, the police have prohibited any political gatherings or protests both within and outside the metropolis.

The Supreme Court, on December 21, 2023, reserved judgment on Yusuf’s appeal challenging the decisions of the Court of Appeal and the State Election Petitions Tribunal, which ousted him from office and declared Gawuna as the winner.

The five-member panel, headed by Justice John Okoro, reserved the judgment following the adoption of briefs of arguments by the involved parties.
