FG Extends Civil Servants' Verification

The Federal Government has extended the deadline for workers’ verification from July 31 to August 15, 2024. This extension allows civil servants additional time to complete their identity verification on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) portal. This step is part of the government’s effort to address issues related to ghost workers, including potential salary stoppages and sanctions.

Civil servants have been rushing to obtain their Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TINs) as part of the verification process. Alongside the TIN, they must provide their IPPIS and salary account numbers. An official notice was issued on Thursday informing employees that they now have until midnight on August 15, 2024, to update their payroll information.

A senior civil servant confirmed the extension, noting that some employees, particularly those in universities, initially resisted the verification process. The extension was deemed necessary to ensure full compliance from all federal workers.

President Bola Tinubu has directed that employees who have relocated abroad while still drawing salaries be required to refund the money. He also mandated punishment for their supervisors and department heads who facilitated or overlooked the fraud. Tinubu emphasized the need for accountability and restitution, ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to address these issues and recover the misappropriated funds.
