Federal Government Greenlights Drought-Tolerant Maize Seeds for Enhanced Agricultural Productivity

In a recent announcement, the Federal Government has sanctioned the release of new maize seed varieties, developed by Nigerian crop scientists, to improve agricultural output across diverse regions in Nigeria. These approved seeds exhibit resilience to drought, resistance to pests such as stem-borers and fall armyworms, and have the potential to yield up to ten tonnes per hectare.

The approval was granted by the National Committee on Naming, Registration and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock breeds/Fisheries. The statement highlighted the drought tolerance and pest resistance of the new maize varieties, emphasizing their capacity to achieve higher yields under optimal agronomic practices.
