Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the Edo State chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has been held captive by kidnappers who are demanding a hefty ransom of N500 million for his release. The distressing development unfolded eight days following his abduction, adding to the anxiety surrounding his safety. According to a family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the kidnappers initiated contact with the family, presenting their demand for the substantial sum in exchange for Aziegbemi’s freedom.
In response to inquiries about the ransom demand, Edo State Police spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, stated that the police were not officially informed of such demands from the kidnappers. However, he affirmed the authorities’ commitment to addressing the situation based on the information available to them. Meanwhile, a family member identified as Sam Ogbeiye implored security agencies to redouble their efforts in securing Aziegbemi’s safe release, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Aziegbemi was forcibly taken by armed gunmen on March 15 while he was returning home after attending a meeting at the Government House in Benin. In response to the abduction, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, revealed that law enforcement agencies have mobilized a tactical team, collaborating closely with vigilante groups and hunters, to conduct extensive searches in the surrounding bush areas. Their collective goal remains the swift and safe rescue of the victim, emphasizing the importance of concerted efforts to combat kidnapping activities in the region.
