The Defence Headquarters(DHQ )has confirmed the tragic loss of 15 military personnel during a communal clash in Delta State. Among the fallen were two Majors, a Captain, and 12 soldiers, who met their demise while responding to a distress call amidst a clash between the Okuama and Okoloba communities on Thursday. According to Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, said the troops were on a peace mission to the Okuoma community in Bomadi LGA when they were ambushed and killed by youths from the community.

In a statement released on Saturday, Brig. Gen. Gusau outlined the circumstances of the attack, revealing that even the commanding officer leading the reinforcement team fell victim to the violence. The incident underscores the volatile nature of the situation, with tensions escalating amid ongoing communal strife. The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the imperative to bring those responsible to justice.

Despite this tragic setback, the military remains resolute in its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the country. While suspects have been apprehended in connection with the attack, the investigation continues to ascertain the motives behind this heinous act. This incident adds to a series of clashes between the two communities, with previous confrontations dating back to 2023 over land and fishing rights, illustrating the deeply rooted tensions that persist in the region.
