A demonstration sparked by escalating food prices escalated into violence on Thursday as reports indicate that troublemakers allegedly seized control of a food-laden trailer along the Suleja-Kaduna road. Eyewitnesses recount that the demonstrators commandeered the trailer, brimming with rice and other provisions, after overpowering the driver, initiating a spree of looting from the vehicle.
One witness described the scene: “I witnessed the unruly individuals encircling the trailer, chanting slogans declaring the cargo as their own. Swiftly, the situation escalated, with the assailants gaining control of the trailer, forcing the driver to flee, and subsequently pilfering from the cargo.”
Security forces, comprising soldiers, police, and civil defense personnel, intervened, deploying tear gas to disperse the protesters and restore order.
