This significant transition follows the unfortunate passing of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu earlier in the day.

Aiyedatiwa’s journey to assuming the role of Governor of Ondo State has been a protracted one, spanning a year. The process was set in motion due to Akeredolu’s health challenges, ultimately leading to his demise on Wednesday while receiving treatment for prostate cancer in Germany.

Navigating a tumultuous political landscape, Aiyedatiwa faced an impeachment threat orchestrated by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly.

Additionally, he encountered staunch opposition from supporters of his late predecessor. The political atmosphere in the state had been shrouded in controversy, prompting activists and constitutional experts to advocate for Akeredolu’s compliance with the 1999 Constitution by transmitting power to Aiyedatiwa.

Governor Akeredolu’s health had been a concern, with his frequent trips abroad for medical treatment. On December 27, 2023, at the age of 67, he succumbed to complications arising from prostate cancer.

Prior to his demise, Akeredolu had made the decision to transmit power to Aiyedatiwa on December 13, 2023, before embarking on his final medical journey overseas.

Regrettably, Akeredolu did not return to Nigeria, marking the end of his second term as governor. His passing signifies a pivotal moment in the political landscape of Ondo State, with Aiyedatiwa stepping into the role under challenging circumstances.
