Boko Haram kills 12, kidnaps 1 in Borno

In Gatamarwa and Tsiha communities in the Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State, suspected Boko Haram terrorists, disguised in military uniforms, carried out a brutal attack, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals and the abduction of one person.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Day, with the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, arriving on motorcycles and in Hilux vans. They indiscriminately fired at people, including mourners returning from Gatamarwa.

In addition to the 12 casualties, two individuals were injured.

The attackers later targeted the Tsiha community near Shikarkir, killing three people, abducting a young lady, and setting houses on fire after looting food supplies.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso Kenneth, confirmed the incident and mentioned that a discreet investigation has been initiated by the police commissioner and other security heads to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

This unfortunate event follows a previous incident in September 2023, where marauding Boko Haram insurgents killed 10 farmers and abducted several others in the Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The insurgents, heavily armed and in search of food and cash, targeted farmers who couldn’t meet their demands. The victims were killed to prevent immediate reporting to security agents, allowing the insurgents to evade immediate pursuit.

The continuous acts of violence underscore the urgent need for heightened security measures and efforts to counter the activities of insurgent groups in the region.
