Governor Hyacinth Alia has issued a directive to suspend all mining operations in Benue State until a comprehensive verification exercise can be conducted to gather data on miners across the region. The order was given during the inauguration of 60 ‘mining marshals’ comprised of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel at the Government House in Makurdi. Representing the governor, Deputy Barrister Sam Ode emphasized a zero-tolerance stance on illegality and urged the civil defence personnel to remain vigilant in combating crimes related to mining.
These marshals are tasked with collaborating closely with members of the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to safeguard the interests of Benue’s populace. Governor Alia emphasized the necessity of suspending mining activities until all miners’ data is compiled through the verification exercise conducted by MIREMCO. He stressed that this measure is crucial for ensuring compliance with regulations and enhancing the welfare of citizens while boosting internally generated revenue (IGR).
The state Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Barrister Fidelis Mnyim, affirmed that Governor Alia’s directive aims to curb illegal mining without hindering legitimate mining operations. Mnyim, who also chairs MIREMCO, highlighted the development of a checklist to scrutinize the mining sector in Benue, signaling a concerted effort to promote responsible mining practices in the state.
