At least 19 people lost their lives, and 49 others sustained injuries in separate road accidents in Kaduna and Ogun states.
In Kaduna, tragedy struck as 13 individuals lost their lives and 40 sustained injuries in a ghastly accident at MRS Filling Station on Ahmadu Bello Way within the Kaduna metropolis. The accident, which occurred around 11 pm on Friday, involved a trailer carrying onions and passengers on top of the goods. The Kaduna State Sector Commander, Kabir Y. Nadabo, attributed the cause of the crash to overspeeding and overloading.
Following the accident, 60 people were identified to have been involved, with the injured receiving treatment at Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital. Efforts are underway to locate the driver of the vehicle, who fled the scene after abandoning the trailer.
In Ogun State, six people died, and nine sustained injuries in separate accidents between Friday and Saturday. On Friday, two individuals lost their lives in an accident at Iyana Odogo on the Ilaro-Owode road, involving a Mitsubishi car and a truck. The spokesperson for FRSC in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, noted that the accident occurred at 6:00 pm due to obstruction and speed violation.
Further accidents occurred on Saturday, with four confirmed deaths on the Ijebu Ode-Ore road and the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. In one incident at Ogbere axis, involving a Daf truck and a Volvo truck, three individuals were injured, and two lost their lives. Another accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway involved a Toyota Camry, resulting from excessive speed and loss of control.
The injured victims were taken to medical facilities for treatment, while the deceased were deposited at morgues for further arrangements. The Sector Commander of FRSC in Ogun State, Anthony Uga, urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
