Baltasar Engonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has been remanded at Malabo’s notorious Black Beach Prison. His detention follows shocking revelations of over 400 sex tapes allegedly involving prominent figures’ wives, discovered during a fraud investigation.
Engonga, a 54-year-old economist, was initially placed under investigation for corruption and embezzlement. During a search of his home and office, officials reportedly found numerous CDs containing footage of sexual encounters with married women. These tapes later surfaced online, sparking a major scandal across social media and leading to intense public scrutiny.
In response, President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo dismissed Engonga, issuing Decree No. 118/2024 on November 4, citing “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties.” Engonga was officially removed from office on November 6.
A viral video of Engonga, handcuffed and shackled, circulated online, showing him appearing in court under heavy security. French media outlet Afrikmatin reported his transfer to Black Beach Prison, confirming the corruption and embezzlement charges. Additionally, online newspaper UGStandard reported that the tapes continued circulating on social networks even after Engonga’s detention.
A recent fact-check by Dubawa verified Engonga’s detention on corruption charges, confirming his current custody in Black Beach Prison. The scandal has ignited a firestorm in Equatorial Guinea, casting a spotlight on alleged misconduct at the highest levels of authority.
