CAPPA: 113 Million Nigerians Lack Access to Drinkable Water on World Water Day

During a press conference held by the Our Water Our Right Coalition (OWORAC) in Lagos to mark World Water Day 2024, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) raised concerns over the inadequate access to water faced by millions in Africa, particularly in Nigeria. CAPPA Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, highlighted the stark reality that over 400 million people in Africa and 110 million in Nigeria lack access to safe and drinkable water, attributing this injustice to the commercialization of water supply by state governments.

Oluwafemi emphasized the detrimental impact of profit-driven water management models on public welfare, noting that despite abundant resources, millions of Nigerians continue to suffer from water scarcity. He specifically highlighted the situation in Lagos State, where over 8 million residents struggle with limited access to potable water, despite the state’s status as a mega-city.

The CAPPA boss reiterated the organization’s stance against privatization and urged for democratic ownership and public control of water services as the solution to address water inaccessibility. He cited examples from various countries, including the termination of partnerships with private water firms due to persistent challenges in access and supply. Oluwafemi condemned plans for water privatization in Lagos State and called for increased government investment in water infrastructure, regulatory oversight, and support for water sector workers.

CAPPA urged the federal and state governments to abandon privatization plans and instead prioritize public-private partnerships to address water challenges effectively. They emphasized the importance of community participation in decision-making processes related to water management to ensure equitable distribution and access to clean and safe drinking water for all Nigerians.
