Today, President Bola Tinubu will inaugurate the rebranded Minna International Airport, alongside an agro-processing zone and modern agricultural equipment. Originally opened by former military leader Ibrahim Babangida in 1990, the airport was renamed Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna, by Governor Umar Bago of Niger last Friday. After extensive renovations, including addressing runway issues, the airport now boasts a fully equipped domestic terminal.
The agro-processing zone, spanning 2,000 hectares, will feature 1,000 hectares dedicated to drip irrigation and greenhouses and another 1,000 hectares for dairy product processing. This initiative aims to revolutionize the agricultural landscape, with plans to streamline the distribution of livestock products. Through innovative transportation methods, such as air freight, the aim is to boost employment opportunities and enhance the agricultural value chain.
Additionally, a significant infrastructure project is underway, involving the construction of approximately 140 kilometers of water irrigation channels from the Shiroro Dam to the agro-processing zone. While this endeavor is part of a long-term vision spanning five decades, the first phase is expected to be completed within the next few years.
